My goal when I joined the internship program was to apply the knowledge that I have learnt from college, hone my skills, and acquire hands on experience in a global platform. I envisioned my internship to be a total learning experience; challenging enough to motivate me for both my career and personal goals. Since it is a work and travel program, I was enthusiastic to discover new places to enjoy and immerse myself to the different cultures and way of life. The culture is more diverse, quality of service is more personalized, you have the freedom to be whoever you want to be without any judgement. Overall, it is a great training ground to learn how to engage different kinds of people. UTP have excellent affiliations with world-class companies. The staff are always accommodating and friendly, whilst keeping the professionalism. My advice to the next generation who wants to pursue an International Program is Go for it! This is the best time for you to experience working with different people not just from a specific country, but from different parts of the world. Launch your career, build up your portfolio, perfect your skills. Also, travel as much as you can, build networks, find your passion, get out of your comfort zone and you will discover there is so much more ahead of you.
It’s been one rollercoaster of a year in the land down under, Australia! I’ve been through storms, literally (Debbie 2017) and figuratively during my time there. With UTP’s help I’ve undergone my culinary training in the luxurious One and Only Hayman Island in the Whitsundays, then transferred to Cable Beach Club Resort and Spa in Broome, Western Australia after the storm. I was able to experience a variety of working environments at these properties, from how one of the top island resorts in Australia operates to my first time in a stand-alone restaurant. Through-out the process of applying, transferring, and settling in to both properties, UTP was there guiding me in the process.
Looking back, I can clearly see the growth, both personally and professionally, that I had thanks to this Traineeship. I’ve gained not only skills, techniques, knowledge, and connections that I can utilize throughout my career in the culinary industry, but also developed a deeper sense of personal responsibility, professionalism, independence, and maturity. At the same time, I also gained cherished friends and memories, priceless experiences and a wider viewpoint of the world. I believe my time in ‘Straya changed me for the better. It gave kindling to my passion for this industry that I think satisfies both the Guests’ appetite and the Chef’s soul. To anyone who’s heart is in Hospitality, who wants to make a career out of this labor of love, I can’t tell you how priceless and beneficial an Internship/Traineeship would be for you. It truly is an eye-opening experience. And I tell you, UTP would just have the right program and support to get you there.
